Align with Nature

The Winter Solstice, which takes place in the Northern Hemisphere on December 21st, marks the shortest day of the year and the longest night. (The Southern Hemisphere will welcome the Summer Solstice.)

During Earth’s travels in the solar system, the planet’s axis tilts and changes how we view the Sun. In December, the Sun is in its most southern point in the sky, making the Solstice in the Northern hemisphere the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Yet the Solstice also signifies the beginning of an increase in the hours of light we receive.

When one trajectory ends, a new one begins.

Many ancient cultures considered the Solstice a time of celebration, of rebirth, as the sun now returns, the days grow longer, plants begin to flourish again — and so will we.

Recognizing the Solstice is a good reminder that we are all part of one interconnected cosmos. Although we are each on our own journey, we will only find fulfillment and purpose when we acknowledge that our bodies, minds, and spirits are deeply interwoven with the rhythms of nature. As mythologist Joseph Campbell wrote:

The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.

Therefore, this is an optimal time to reflect on the past year, on its challenges and successes, to take stock of where we are now, and to set our intention for the future. We are all part of an ongoing transformation. Mindful of our connection with all life, we can continue on our own sacred journey with courage and compassion.

In the words of Jane Goodall:

“Each one of us matters, has a role to play, and makes a difference. Each one of us must take responsibility for our own lives, and above all, show respect and love for living things around us, especially each other.”
