The only permanent thing in this world is change. Without change, nothing could ever happen, but change is also often hard to accept. As much as we would like to hold on to people, our possessions, and our bodies, we can’t fulfill this desire. But if we recognize that we are part of a greater whole, we can learn to accept reality and move through life with greater inner stability.
Cultivate Awareness: Are you often lost in thought? Most of us are. Our minds create an endless stream of thoughts. We can’t stop thinking, but we can become more aware of our thoughts and learn to observe them rather than identify with them. When we become aware of our thoughts, we are less likely to get pulled into emotional reactions. The next time you find yourself dwelling on a problem, say to yourself, “I’m having the thought that…” For example, if you are thinking, “I’m never going to solve this,” say, “I’m having the thought that I’m never going to solve this.” In this way, the thought loses some of its power. Thoughts are just thoughts. Practicing mindfulness meditation every day will help you train your mind.
Cultivate Connection: Many of us feel disconnected these days. We spend a lot of time online and not ‘face-to-face’ with other people. We may feel isolated. Some people live with their partners or families, others with pets, and others alone. Whatever your situation, disconnection from others can cause instability, but so can disconnection from ourselves. Through practicing mindfulness, we can become more aware of our body’s sensations, our emotions, and our thoughts. Put your hand on your heart and say to yourself, “I’m here for you,” as a good friend would. Focus on your breathing. Get out of your head and go back to your body, back to your breath.
Cultivate Purpose: There are many ways to find purpose in your life. Some people find purpose in caring for those they love, others in working for a cause that benefits their community, and others find purpose in creative projects. We can find inspiration through finding role models, such as Jane Goodall, who said: ” You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
We are all connected to everyone and everything in the universe. Therefore, everything one does as an individual affects the whole. All thoughts, words, images, prayers, blessings, and deeds are listened to by all that is.
