Mindful Writing Workshops

Mindful Writing Workshops:The Power of Words

Mindful writing, also known as expressive writing, involves expressing our deepest thoughts and feelings. Putting pen to paper, we can free ourselves from our inner critics and attend to the narrative of our experiences to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our relationship to the world around us. Research shows that by writing and reflecting on our stories, we can gain insights into how we might deal with obstacles to emotional well-being.

Writing about not only facts but feelings, and not only what happened but how you felt about it,  expands your perspective, and helps you gain insights into your life circumstances.

About the Program

Spiritual traditions the world over use particular words in prayer, mantras, and transmissions. Whatever your beliefs, it is evident that words have power. We have all been stung or comforted by someone else’s words or our own.
Words can be used to harm or to heal, to encourage or discourage, to inspire or deflate.
In a confidential and supportive environment, we can delve into the meanings of significant words and phrases—such as faith, hope, and perseverance.

Through mindfulness meditation and writing, we will allow space for insights to emerge.

In these contemplative writing sessions, we will explore how we can use words to inspire and motivate us to take the next steps on our unfolding paths.

What to Expect

In these monthly workshops we will use the power of words to explore past experiences, present circumstances, and future direction.

Group Covenant

Everyone is a writer, and we will regard each other as equals.. This is not a workshop on the craft of writing or a time of critiquing. All writing is fiction unless proven otherwise. Invite your imagination. Sometimes facts don't convey the whole truth of our experience. We agree to assume that all writing others share with us is fictional unless they specify that it is autobiographical. This allows participants to share their writing without feeling as though they're revealing their life story, if they don't choose to do so.

Program Outline

Each workshop consists of:* A brief guided meditation. • Facilitator's sharing of different ways of looking at the theme, with definitions, quotes, stories, or poems. • Prompts with time for optional sharing, either with partners or with the group. • Closing reflection.Note: The prompts are meant to get participants’ writing started and can be used however participants find useful.

Commitments and Expectations

*Sessions are for writers and non-writers alike. No experience is required.*Sharing is optional. Each session includes opportunities for participants to share something they've written or discovered during the session. Confidentiality is required. Please do not reveal any writer's identity outside the group.

Link past and present

There are times in life when we need to choose between various actions, which road to follow, and which one to give up. However, these roads not taken may hold possibilities for the present and still come to fruition.

Make connections.

Our lives unfold in a spiral, and transitions often present familiar patterns and challenges. We'll connect past turning points to current challenges and consider next steps.

Set goals and create an action plan

What is possible now? What change might we like to make? We'll consider options and gain insights.
