Climbing Over Limitations

What does Focus and Transcend mean?

Focus in Latin means hearth or fireplace.  When we focus, we shine the light of our attention on whatever we would like to bring warmth, energy, or life to.

Transcend comes from the Latin transcendere, meaning to climb over.

Through better directing our focus, we can go beyond our perceived limitations.

Who are you?

Each of us was born in a certain time and a certain place, with particular talents and gifts as well as with obstacles and difficulties to deal with.  And each of us is unique, with a special path to follow.

Those with attention issues (ADHD) don’t suffer from a deficit as much as a global sense of attention.  Everything seems interesting.  So it may be difficult to focus, or bring attention and concentrate on just one thing at a time.

Mindfulness is one tool that can bring a new quality to life and help establish a more focused mind.

Through mindfulness techniques we can develop the skills to concentrate on the activity we are performing, and learn to bring our attention back to it when distractions occur.

What do you want to achieve?

What we think upon grows.  Wherever we shine the light of our attention, our minds follow.  And if we are following many things at one time, little can be accomplished.

However, we can begin to quiet the body, quiet the mind, and train the attention to go in the direction we choose.

The following exercise was taken from the book: The Mindfulness Prescription for Adult ADHD by Lidia Zylowska, M.D.

You can try this for yourself, and teach your children to use it as well.

The next time you feel yourself pulled in many different directions, remember the word:

STOP

S: Stop or pause
T: Take a breath and relax
O: Observe in the present moment
What sounds do I notice?
What is my breath like?
How does my body feel?
P: Proceed
Where was my attention before I stopped?
Shall I continue with what I was doing or switch to something else?

If your thoughts are negative or self-judgmental, take a moment to notice that and switch the conversation.

“When you connect to the silence within you, that is when you can make sense of the disturbance going on around you.”
