Meditation and Creativity

Meditation has many benefits, such as reducing stress, calming the mind, enhancing focus, accessing deeper sources of wisdom and ultimately, perhaps, arriving at a state of omniscience.

But meditation can also enhance creativity. Here are a few ways:

Meditation frees you from habitual thinking.

Through practicing meditation, you come to realize that you are not your thoughts. You are so much deeper and vaster than your thoughts. Your mind is the source of your continual overflow of thoughts. Therefore, new ideas, new insights, new ways of approaching things will come to mind. When you are engaging in creative work, you become able to better screen out distractions and bring all of your attention to the task at hand.

Meditation helps you see all sides of a situation.

Over time, you can see many aspects of whatever task you are engaged in, and your work becomes deeper, richer, more nuanced.

Meditation enhances awareness of beauty.

Confucius said, “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” Meditating awakens you to the beauty inherent all around, even in seemingly unlikely places. This will bring greater sources of inspiration for your creative work.

Meditation brings detachment.

When you are too attached to your creative work, you may be reluctant to let go of earlier versions in order to keep on improving. With detachment, you realize that your fount of creativity is infinite, and when you let go you will always receive more ideas to help you refine your work.

When you are able to let go of pre-conceived identity patterns, you can contact deeper sources of wisdom and creative ideas. You realize that you are more than your personal history. New realms of discovery await you.

Meditation allows you to become aware of your true source.

“True creativity flows only from stillness. When stillness becomes conscious, the spiritual dimension enters your life and you begin to be guided by an intelligence greater than the human mind.” Eckhart Tolle
