Write to Move Forward

Four weekly sessions to learn from the past, work through obstacles, set goals, create action steps, and open to new possibilities.

This series uses writing and journaling both in the sessions and as homework between sessions. Writing is a way to address both the problems and the solutions. As a helping professional, I facilitate and guide you through this process. You will need a notebook.

1. Where are you now? Create a lifeline of key moments in your life at various stages. What brought you meaning and fulfillment? Which of these moments were you able to develop and which have remained dormant? Choose a particular moment and, through writing prompts, expand on its meaning for you and on its possibilities.

2. Work on a personal narrative. A personal narrative is a story about a personal experience told in first person. What are the touchstones of your personal narrative, the turning points? What obstacles did you have to move through to get where you are now? What is your current goal and what is your current obstacle? What helped you in the past to move forward?

3. Re-write your personal story. Then work backward from your current goal, assuming you’ve already reached it. What would you have had to have done to get where you are? Create action steps.

4. Make your goal a habit. What kinds of actions do you need to take on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis? Set up a calendar with deadlines and turning points.
